Mastering Modern Edge DNS: The Definitive Guide to A, CNAME, CAA, and SRV Records

DNS is the backbone of the internet, yet its RFC specifications are often misunderstood. Here is a practical engineering guide to mastering DNS records on modern Anycast infrastructure.

When managing subdomains on LovieMe, understanding how different DNS record types behave is crucial for zero-downtime deployments, bulletproof security, and optimal latency.

📌 1. A and AAAA Records: Host IP Resolution

The most fundamental record types in DNS:

  • A Record: Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address (32-bit, e.g. 198.51.100.1).
  • AAAA Record: Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address (128-bit, e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334).
; Example A and AAAA configuration
myapp.lovie.me. 3600 IN A 198.51.100.1
myapp.lovie.me.   3600  IN  AAAA  2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334

When to use: Pointing your subdomain directly to a Dedicated Server, Virtual Private Server (VPS), or static IP load balancer.

🔗 2. CNAME Records & The RFC 1912 Exclusivity Rule

A CNAME (Canonical Name) record creates an alias pointing one hostname to another.

; CNAME pointing to Vercel edge
api.lovie.me. 3600 IN CNAME cname.vercel-dns.com.

The Critical Rule: CNAME Exclusivity (RFC 1912, Section 2.4)

According to the DNS specification, if a CNAME record exists for a node, no other record of any type (A, TXT, MX) may exist on that exact same hostname.

  • If you set @ to a CNAME pointing to Vercel, you cannot also set an A record or MX record on @.
  • To receive custom email while using a CNAME, LovieMe handles email forwarding via parent-zone MX infrastructure so your alias works cleanly without RFC collisions!

🔒 3. CAA Records: Preventing Unauthorized SSL Issuance

A CAA (Certification Authority Authorization) record (RFC 8659) tells resolvers which Certificate Authorities are permitted to generate SSL/TLS certificates for your domain.

; Allow Let's Encrypt only
myapp.lovie.me. 3600 IN CAA 0 issue "letsencrypt.org"

; Allow DigiCert for wildcards
myapp.lovie.me. 3600 IN CAA 0 issuewild "digicert.com"

; Send breach reports to your security team
myapp.lovie.me. 3600 IN CAA 0 iodef "mailto:security@yourcompany.com"

Why this matters: If a compromised or rogue CA attempts to issue an SSL certificate for your subdomain, modern browsers and CAs will reject the request if it does not match your CAA policy.

🎯 4. SRV Records: General Service Discovery

The SRV (Service) record (RFC 2782) allows services to run on non-standard ports and protocols without hardcoding IP addresses in client applications:

; Format: _service._proto.name. TTL IN SRV priority weight port target.
_minecraft._tcp.play.lovie.me. 3600 IN SRV 10 60 25565 mc.server.net.

Fields breakdown:

  1. Priority: Lower value means higher priority.
  2. Weight: Load balancing among servers with identical priority.
  3. Port: The TCP or UDP port the service listens on.
  4. Target: The canonical hostname of the destination host.

⏱️ TTL Optimization Strategy

Time-to-Live (TTL) determines how long intermediate resolvers cache DNS queries:

Scenario Recommended TTL Rationale
Stable Production 3600s (1 hr) Minimizes DNS query volume and optimizes client latency
Active Migration 60s (1 min) Ensures DNS switches happen in near real-time worldwide
Development / Testing 300s (5 min) Fast turnaround when updating test server endpoints

On LovieMe's Gcore Anycast network, updates apply to our authoritative edge nameservers in under 2 seconds, giving you immediate control whenever you modify your records.
